This T-shirt illustration was inspired by a terracotta sculpture of Xipe Totec that is now on display in National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
In Aztec mythology Xipe Totec is a life-death-rebirth deity and god of vegetation, agriculture, spring and seasons. This was an interesting project, I was curious if I could transform the terracotta sculpture into a colored illustration without loosing the original style and feel of the sculpture.
The inspiration for this artwork came from a book about the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The first step was a loose sketch in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet:
This sketch was then traced and colored in Illustrator:
